Install the Browser Extension

Web Insights adds website-level activity tracking through our new browser extensions. To use Web Insights, you need to install the Web Insights extension for your browser. The extension is currently available for Chrome-based (including Brave, Edge, and others) browsers and Firefox.

Download the new browser extensions from the browser marketplaces:

note

Web Insights needs WhatPulse 6.0 or later to function. Make sure you are running the latest version of WhatPulse.

Installing

  1. Navigate to the browser extension page for your browser (links above).
  2. Click the Add to [Browser] button.
  3. If prompted, allow the permissions for the extension to function.
  4. Once installed, the extension will connect to the WhatPulse app, which will prompt for your permission to start tracking web activity.
  5. Grant permission in the WhatPulse app to enable Web Insights tracking.
  6. You are now set up to use Web Insights! The extension will start tracking your web activity and sending the data to the WhatPulse app for analysis.

Websites will start appearing in your WhatPulse stats under the existing applications section. You can view detailed statistics about your browsing habits, including time spent on each site, keyboard and mouse usage while browsing, and more.

Here's a short video demonstrating the installation process on Chrome:

The extension will not run in incognito/private mode by default. You can enable it in incognito/private mode through your browser's extension settings if you wish to track activity in that mode. We don't recommend enabling this mode, as it'll track everything you do in incognito/private mode, defeating the purpose of that mode.

Excluding websites

If you want to exclude certain websites or domains from being tracked by Web Insights, you can do so from the settings in the WhatPulse app. This allows you to maintain your privacy on certain sites or prevent skewing your statistics with certain types of sites. For more information on excluding websites, check out our guide on excluding websites from Web Insights.

Disabling or Uninstalling

If you wish to disable Web Insights at any time, or remove it completely, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. Open the extensions list in your browser.
  2. Locate the WhatPulse Web Insights extension.
  3. Click the toggle to disable the extension or click the remove button to uninstall it completely.

You do not need to perform any additional steps in the WhatPulse app; disabling or uninstalling the extension will stop all Web Insights tracking immediately.
