Sun Microsystems, Inc. was an American technology company founded in 1982 by Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim, Scott McNealy and Bill Joy. Sun became best known for its workstation and server hardware (notably SPARC processors and Sun workstations), the Solaris operating system, network file system (NFS) and earlier contributions to networked computing. Sun is also the originator of the Java programming language and platform (originally released in 1995) and a wide range of developer and enterprise software, including Java Web Start and Java Update components referenced in your sample applications.

In 2005–2008 Sun pursued several open-source initiatives (OpenSolaris, contributions to OpenJDK, and others). The company was acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010; the Sun brand and many product lines were consolidated under Oracle.
