Square was a Japanese video game developer and publisher best known for creating the Final Fantasy series. As an independent company, Square developed and released Final Fantasy IX (2000) for the PlayStation, among other influential console RPGs. In 2003 Square merged with rival publisher Enix to form Square Enix, combining two of Japan's most prominent role-playing game houses into a single global entertainment company.
Today, under the Square Enix umbrella, the company continues to develop and publish major game franchises (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts) and operates across console, PC, mobile, and online services. Square Enix also manages merchandise, multimedia adaptations, and global publishing operations, maintaining development studios and regional subsidiaries worldwide. Many legacy Square titles, including Final Fantasy IX, are now distributed and supported by Square Enix.
