Runic Games, Inc.
Runic Games, Inc. was an American independent video game developer founded in 2008 by a team of industry veterans including Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and Travis Baldree. The studio became best known for the action-RPG Torchlight (2009) and its critically praised sequel Torchlight II (2012), as well as the action-adventure title Hob (2017). Runic focused on tightly crafted, player-focused single- and co-op experiences and cultivated an active modding community around Torchlight II.
In 2010 Runic Games was acquired by Perfect World Entertainment, under whose ownership the studio continued to develop and publish its games. In late 2017 Perfect World closed Runic's Seattle studio following Hob's release; many former Runic employees went on to form or join other studios (notably Echtra Games, which later worked on Torchlight-related projects). Runic's legacy remains strong in the ARPG niche through the Torchlight franchise and its community-driven modding scene.
