Macromedia, Inc. was a software company best known for authoring and multimedia tools that shaped early web and interactive content. Founded in the early 1990s, Macromedia developed and marketed products such as Flash (originating from FutureSplash), Director, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Authorware, and ColdFusion. Its tools were widely used by designers and developers to create animations, interactive websites, rich internet applications, and e-learning content throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
In December 2005 Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems; many Macromedia products were either absorbed into Adobe's product line (for example Dreamweaver and ColdFusion) or eventually discontinued (notably Flash Player, which reached end-of-life in 2020). The macromedia.com domain now redirects to Adobe; current social and code-hosting presences for legacy Macromedia technologies are maintained under Adobe's official channels.
