Macromedia, Inc. was a software company best known for its multimedia, internet, and web-development products. Founded in the early 1990s, Macromedia produced a suite of tools that became central to building rich interactive content for the web and CD-ROM distribution — notably Flash (the Flash Player and Flash authoring tools), Shockwave/Director, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, FreeHand, and (after acquisitions) ColdFusion. Flash in particular became ubiquitous for animations, interactive applications, and video on the web throughout the late 1990s and 2000s.

Macromedia acquired and integrated a number of technologies and companies during its independent existence (for example, adopting the FutureSplash product as Flash) and maintained a large developer and content-creator ecosystem around its runtime players and authoring tools. In 2005 Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems; the Macromedia brand was retired and many of its products and technologies were folded into Adobe’s product lines...
