Lotus Development Corporation (acquired by IBM)
Lotus Development Corporation was an influential software company founded in 1982 (notably by Mitch Kapor) that produced some of the most important PC-era productivity applications. Lotus 1-2-3, introduced in 1983 and largely responsible for Lotus's early success, was a dominant spreadsheet application through the 1980s and helped establish the company as a major desktop-software vendor. Over time Lotus expanded its product line to include groupware and office productivity products such as Lotus Notes, Lotus Organizer, Lotus Word Pro and the Windows relational database/front-end Lotus Approach (part of the SmartSuite lineup).
In 1995 Lotus Development Corporation was acquired by IBM, and many Lotus products and technologies were integrated into IBM's software portfolio and branded as "IBM Lotus".
