GitHub, Inc. is a software development platform and company founded in 2008 to host and facilitate collaborative software development using the Git version control system. It provides a web-based interface for Git repositories, along with integrated tools for issue tracking, code review (pull requests), continuous integration/continuous deployment (GitHub Actions), package management, and project management. GitHub hosts millions of public and private repositories and has become a central hub for open-source projects and developer collaboration worldwide. In 2018 GitHub was acquired by Microsoft, but it continues to operate as a distinct developer-focused platform and ecosystem.
