The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1985 by Richard M. Stallman to support the free software movement. The FSF's mission is to promote computer user freedom and defend the rights of all software users. It sponsors the GNU Project, which develops a large collection of free software, and advocates for copyleft licensing through the GNU General Public License (GPL) to ensure that software remains free for users to run, study, modify, and share.

In addition to supporting GNU development, the FSF engages in public education, policy advocacy, and legal work surrounding software freedom. The organization maintains resources such as the Free Software Directory, runs campaigns (for example against proprietary DRM and software as a service restrictions), provides GPL compliance and enforcement guidance, and raises funds through membership and donations to finance its activities and legal efforts on behalf of the free software community.
