DXX-Rebirth Project (open-source community)
DXX-Rebirth is a community-driven open-source project that maintains and modernizes source ports of the classic Descent and Descent II games (commonly distributed as d1x-rebirth.exe and d2x-rebirth.exe builds). The project grew out of earlier efforts (D1X / D2X) to run the original Descent engines on modern platforms and has evolved into a sustained collaborative effort to preserve, fix, and extend the original games while keeping compatibility with original data files.
The project provides cross-platform builds, bug fixes, networking/multiplayer improvements, modern input and rendering support, and quality-of-life enhancements that let the original game run on contemporary Windows, Linux, and macOS systems. Development is coordinated by a volunteer community; source code and releases are hosted on SourceForge with code repositories/mirrors available on GitHub and other services.
