byuu (aka Near) — higan / bsnes project

byuu is the pseudonym of a well-known independent developer who created bsnes and later higan, a family of high-accuracy emulators primarily focused on the Super Nintendo (SNES) and several other retro consoles. The projects began with bsnes (an effort to produce cycle-accurate SNES emulation) and evolved into higan to reflect broader multi-system emulation goals and a stricter emphasis on preservation and accuracy. Builds such as higan-balanced.exe are distributions/configurations of higan that trade off performance and accuracy for different user needs.

The work is community-centered and largely open-source, with source and releases historically published via the developer's website and GitHub. byuu/Near is known for deep technical work on hardware-level emulation, reverse engineering firmware and cartridge hardware behavior, and for producing multiple emulator branches and tooling used by preservationists and emulator developers.
