Black Isle Studios
Black Isle Studios was the in-house role-playing game (RPG) development division of Interplay Entertainment, active primarily in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Formed to focus on computer RPGs, the studio produced and oversaw several highly regarded titles including Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale (and Icewind Dale II), and Fallout 2, and worked on patches and configuration tools for these releases. The studio became known for deep narrative design, complex party-based RPG mechanics, and influential designers such as Chris Avellone and Feargus Urquhart among its alumni.
Black Isle was effectively shuttered by Interplay in the early 2000s; many of its key developers left to form or join other notable RPG studios (notably Obsidian Entertainment). The Black Isle name and many of the rights around Interplay-era RPGs remain tied to Interplay, and while the original studio is no longer an active developer, its games continue to be celebrated and maintained by fans and re-releases.
