Microchip Technology Inc. (formerly Atmel Corporation)
Atmel was a semiconductor company founded in the 1980s that became well known for its AVR family of 8-bit microcontrollers, flash memory products, and touch and mixed-signal devices. Its AVR microcontrollers (and the associated Atmel Studio development environment) were widely adopted by hobbyists, educators, and industry (notably used in many Arduino boards). Atmel developed a range of embedded devices and development tools targeting consumer, industrial, and automotive markets.
In 2016 Atmel was acquired by Microchip Technology Inc. and its product lines and development tools were integrated into Microchip's portfolio. Microchip is a large semiconductor company that produces microcontrollers (PIC, dsPIC, AVR, ARM SAM), analog and interface products, memory, wireless solutions, and development tools (MPLAB, Microchip Studio). Microchip continues to support and maintain the legacy Atmel/AVR products and tools under the Microchip umbrella.
