ChatStash privacy policy

The short version
ChatStash does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any of your data. It has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, and no network requests of its own. Everything the extension saves stays in your own browser on your own device, and you can export or delete it at any time.
This policy explains exactly what the ChatStash browser extension ("ChatStash", "the extension") handles, where that data lives, and what we as the developer can and cannot see. It applies to the ChatStash extension for Chrome, Firefox, and other Chromium-based browsers, published by WhatPulse. Use of the whatpulse.org website is covered separately by the WhatPulse website privacy policy.
Data the extension handles
ChatStash has a single purpose: to keep a local backup of your own AI chat conversations so you can search, read, and export them later. To do that, it reads and stores the following on your device.

ChatStash only reads pages on the AI chat platforms it supports. It does not read, monitor, or store anything from any other website you visit, and it does not touch your browsing history, bookmarks, downloads, cookies, passwords, or form data.
What we do not do
- No collection. The extension does not send your conversations, settings, or any other data to WhatPulse or to anyone else. We never receive it, so we cannot read it, store it, or hand it over.
- No servers or accounts. ChatStash has no backend, no cloud sync, and no sign-up. It works fully offline once installed.
- No analytics or telemetry. There is no usage tracking, no crash reporting, no fingerprinting, and no advertising or measurement code in the extension.
- No selling or sharing. Since no data ever leaves your device, there is nothing to sell, rent, share, or transfer to third parties.
- No remote code. The extension runs only the code shipped in the reviewed package. It does not download or execute code from external sources.
Chrome Web Store limited use compliance
ChatStash's use of information received from Google APIs and from the pages it runs on adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically, data handled by ChatStash is used only to provide the user-facing backup, search, and export features described in the store listing. It is not transferred to anyone, is not used for advertising, personalization, or market research, is not used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes, and is not read by any human, because it never leaves the user's device.
Permissions and why they are needed
- Access to the supported AI chat sites. Needed to read the conversation currently open in your tab so it can be saved locally. Access is limited to the supported AI platforms, and the content is only written to your local database.
- Local storage. Needed to keep your conversation archive and your settings in the browser on your device.
- Side panel. Needed to show the ChatStash sidebar where you browse, search, and export your saved conversations.
- Notifications (optional). Used only to confirm a conversation was saved, and only if you turn the notifications setting on.
ChatStash requests no permissions beyond what these features require.
Your control over your data
- View and search. Everything ChatStash stores is visible to you in the sidebar.
- Export. Export a single conversation or your entire archive to JSON at any time, from the sidebar or from Settings under Data Management.
- Delete. Delete individual conversations from the sidebar, or use "Clear All Data" in Settings to permanently remove everything.
- Auto-delete. Set rules in Settings so old conversations are removed automatically.
- Turn it off per platform. Disable backups for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini individually in Settings.
- Uninstall. Removing the extension removes its access. Your browser clears the extension's local database as part of that, so export your archive first if you want to keep it.
Because we hold no copy of your data, requests to access, correct, or erase it do not need to go through us. You already have full and direct control from within the extension.
Third parties
ChatStash uses no third-party services, SDKs, or trackers. The AI platforms you use, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Gemini, have their own privacy policies covering the conversations you have with them on their websites. Those policies are unaffected by ChatStash, which only makes a local copy of what is already displayed to you in your browser.
Children
ChatStash is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because it collects no information at all.
Changes to this policy
If the extension ever changes in a way that affects data handling, this page is updated before that version is published, and the date at the top changes with it. Material changes are also noted in the extension's release notes.
