Macromedia, Inc. was a software company best known for authoring and multimedia/web-development tools and runtime players. Active primarily in the 1990s and early 2000s, Macromedia developed and distributed flagship products such as Macromedia Flash (Flash Player and the Flash authoring tools), Director/Director Player, Dreamweaver (web design), Fireworks (graphics), and various multimedia/authoring technologies and plug-ins used to create interactive web content and rich internet applications.
Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems in 2005, and much of its technology and product lineup was integrated into Adobe's offerings (Flash, Dreamweaver, ColdFusion via prior acquisitions, etc.). The Macromedia web domain historically redirects to Adobe, and the Flash platform it popularized was maintained by Adobe until its end-of-life in 2020.
