KDE is a long-running international free software community best known for the KDE Plasma desktop and a large suite of open-source applications. The KDE project was started in 1996 by Matthias Ettrich and has since grown into an umbrella of projects producing desktop environments (Plasma), libraries (KDE Frameworks), and many desktop and cross-platform applications such as Kdenlive (video editor) and KDE Connect (device integration). KDE software is released under open-source licenses (primarily GPL/LGPL) and developed by volunteers and contributors worldwide.

KDE e.V. is the registered non-profit association (based in Germany) that represents and supports the KDE community, handling legal, financial, and organizational matters such as events, infrastructure, and outreach. While much of KDE's code is hosted on the community's GitLab instance (https://invent.kde.org), the community also maintains a presence on GitHub and social platforms.
