Illusion Softworks
Illusion Softworks was a Czech video game developer founded in the late 1990s and is best known as the creator of the original Mafia (2002), a narrative-driven open-world crime game that received wide critical praise for its storytelling and attention to period detail. During the late 1990s and 2000s the studio produced several PC/console titles and established itself as one of the better-known game developers from the Czech Republic.
In the late 2000s the studio was acquired by Take-Two Interactive and rebranded as 2K Czech (around 2007–2008), becoming part of the 2K publishing label. Over time the teams and IPs were integrated into 2K’s other development efforts (with personnel working on later Mafia entries and related projects via 2K Czech and successor studios). The original Illusion Softworks brand and website are now defunct and its legacy largely survives through the Mafia franchise and successor teams within 2K.
