Keyboard switch lifespan estimator

Estimate how long your keyboard switches will last based on your daily typing volume and switch durability rating.

What the switch rating means

Switch manufacturers rate their switches for a certain number of keypresses per switch. This is tested under controlled lab conditions and represents when the switch mechanism may start to degrade. Here are common ratings:

20 million

Budget membrane and rubber dome switches. Found in entry-level keyboards.

50 million

Standard mechanical switches (Cherry MX, Gateron, Kailh). The most common rating.

80 million

Premium mechanical switches. Some Kailh BOX and Gateron variants.

100 million

High-end optical and hall-effect switches. Essentially infinite for most users.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your estimated keystrokes per day, or pick a usage preset (light, average, heavy, gamer, writer/coder).
  2. Enter your switch's rated lifespan, or pick a common preset (20M, 50M, 80M, 100M).
  3. See the estimated lifespan in years and months, plus a comparison across usage levels.

Not sure how many keystrokes you type per day? Most office workers type around 40,000-60,000 keystrokes per day. Gamers and coders tend to type more.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this estimate?

This provides a rough estimate. Real-world lifespan depends on typing style, environmental conditions, and the fact that some keys are used far more than others.

Do I need to replace the whole keyboard when switches wear out?

Not necessarily. On hot-swappable mechanical keyboards, you can replace individual switches. On soldered boards, it is more difficult but still possible with desoldering skills.
