WhatPulse Forums

Posted on 15th March 2005, 19:29:02

Approximately four to ten hours ago the forums were hacked and defaced causing them to be taken down for the time being, we will be switching over to vBulletin as soon as possible.

As the one time licensing fee for vBulletin is US$160 we are asking anyone with the means who is willing and able to make a small contribution please do so.

If we could just get $1 from 160 people we're there! :D

Please click the PayPal button to your right --------->

The forums will be back up by the end of the week

Thank you so much in advance!!

--
Counting: USD $22,35 sofar.
--

Update: Forums are back up, all data recovered, so no posts are lost thankfully. Wasted generously bought the license by himself, and restored the forums to their old state.

Don't let him wind up for all the costs though, support him! :D

I'm sorry to hear about the forums PinkFloyd. :( You know I was an active contributor to it, fun place too.

When you make the move to vB, will you transfer the user base? Or will we have to join again?

    To lawrenceku:

phpBB is the most security flawed major forum software I've seen. vB is also one of the most secure forums I've ever seen.

Now what I am supposed to do during my Information Processing lessons at school?

    *sigh*

Whoever did this will suffer the lectures of 1000 information processing lessons!

" Now what I am supposed to do"

    ...

You could learn? :P Or you could go to the temp forum I made for whatpulse while this one is down

(I'll put the link back once the admins ok it)

PinkFloyd or Wasted: If you want to be admins for whatever reason, I'd be happy to add you. I merely made this as a replacement forum until you get the vB one up.

Sorry to hear about that. Will the data from the phpBB forums be converted to vB or is it lost?

It depends on whether they backed up the forum recently. phpBB seems to be having a lot of security issues as of late.

Saying phpBB has more security issues than forum package xyz is like saying Windows has more security issues than OSxyz.

This is because phpBB is more popular and with the popularity come people who want to undermine it and try their best to take them down and hack them. Examples of this are the NeverEverNoSanity worm and the hacking of the phpBB site itself.

It's extremely stupid of humans, in this day and age, to go around "hacking" other people's hard work. Why do they do it? Do they get some kind of sexual orgy out of it or is it because they were just wanting to be an asshole. Whatever the case, I hope they get caught, as much as I want each and every script kiddie caught, and put in a jail cell with a 400lb guy named Bubba.

I'd like to see them try and "hack" their way out of that.

Ahh I want my forums....Anyways I prefer phpBB. But if vB ever becomes as popular as phpBB it will start getting hacked just as muched. But phpBB is CONSTANTLY being updated with security fixes and such.

My money is on that one of the admin accounts got cracked into. I hope one of the admins could clarify this. Was if messed up by editing core files, or was it some 14 year old kid who has 'uber 1337 h4x0r5 skills'?

The reason that vBulletin isn't as popular as phpBB is because vBulletin isn't free. :P

Neither is Invisionfree; I've loved IPB boards, but they cost an arm and a leg to get. Hopefully, we can get this sorted out. I can try to make a donation, though I can promise nothing x_X

Off topic here, but I'm curious as to how you get the number of queries executed at the bottom of your page. What's the function for that?

    Off topic answer; The queries for this website are handled by a DB class to cover up/fix any query errors. var $total_queries; function query() { $total_queries++; }

    Is all you need.

grr, I am really sick of people saying phpBB is full of security holes, as the phpBB team recently stated, there have been bugs recently, but they have been fixed. what version were you running when it was hacked?

PHPBB is fine, as long as use the latest version. the old ones had a stupid security flaw. gaiaonline.com uses phpbb: look how many users THEY have.

Unfortunately I recently sold a redundant license of vB on eBay. I didn't use it any longer so I sold it. Good luck though.

vBulletin does have a lot more functionality than phpBB, and because there is a company behind it which makes money, they are compelled to fix bugs and provide quicker customer support.

PS: You will be able to port users and posts over to vBulletin database. vBulletin has this feature.
