WhatPulse 1.5 and Windows Vista

Unfortunately due to security features in Windows Vista such as UAC (User Account Control) and other such things, WhatPulse may not function correctly.

Here are some known errors:

After a restart of pc/client, WhatPulse gives an error stating whatpulse.wpw was made by a different version.
WhatPulse GUI, popup balloons and such may look odd/cut off text.
WhatPulse may not count keystrokes and mouse-clicks while in full-screen 3d applications.

The best fix for whatpulse.wpw errors seems to be to install it to C:\Users\~YourUserName~\WhatPulse\ or another directory. Do not install it to C:\Program Files\WhatPulse\.

There is very little information on full fixes for all of this. For some it works fine, for others it doesn’t.

Disable UAC? What a pathetic excuse to fix a program that doesn't need, nor should require administrative rights in the first place.

While I can't comment on the key click during full screen games and the like, I found a solution to the dialog about the WhatPulse.wpw file being generated by a different version. This sometimes happens on Windows XP too, and the simple solution is to delete the file and let WhatPulse recreate it, but the problem with Vista is, nobody understands why this doesn't work.

The reason is, WhatPulse is writing the file to the Program Files directory (A BIG no no on any version of Windows for various reasons). When you go to delete this file from the Program Files folder, it doesn't fix it. This occurs because in Windows Vista, virtualisation is used to redirect write requests to the Program Files folder to stop programs from crashing.
Therefore, the real location of your corrupt WhatPulse.wpw file is actually:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\WhatPulse\WhatPulse.wpw

Delete that file and run WhatPulse again, you'll find it now works.

Fix
I'm running windows vista, and i've had no problems. However, i've disabled UAC. I disabled it the day i got it. It's terrible.
Anyways, heres how to do it.

-Click on the windows icon in the bottem right, formally the start button.

-Type in, and run, "run".

-Type in "msconfig" in run.

-Click on the "tools" tab.

-On the list, find "Disable UAC" and hit "Launch"

-Restart your computer.

All done! :D
Hope this helped people.

Alex

no problems found
I installed WhatPulse 1.5 on my gf's new computer and it's a Vista, and we have had no issues with it.

That's pathetic
Disabling UAC as a solution to this problem is crap, frankly. The solution posted by Ideas Man works perfectly, for the record.

Actually UAC is pathetic. So is Vista.

If this is confirmed by someone then I shall consider adding it to the article.
